Emotions Under The Surface

Mr. Peter Stanton

I don’t normally watch documentaries about animals or biology.

One documentary I did see a while ago was about the Australian desert and the life that happens underground.  In the Australia desert it can seem pretty barren without much happening.

But underneath the surface things are different.

Apparently there are animals that have an active life down there. So different to what you would find if you just walk around in the hot sun— activity that you would never know about.  There can be water underground, underground rivers. There is a lot of life under the surface of the desert that I was so ignorant about.

Likewise with our emotions, there is a lot going on under the surface that we can be ignorantly unaware about. Our emotions can have a life of their own that can affect us in ways we just don’t know.

Not thinking about our emotions won't stop them influencing us.  Sometimes maybe it will be okay if we just carry on unaware. But maybe we can get angry or stress distracted and we don’t know why.  This can have negative impacts on ourselves and others, especially if we lash out or our emotions get the better of us. We can seem to be acting emotionally and really embarrass ourselves, or worse hurt others we love in ways we just wouldn’t do if we had thought through things more.

I think it is good to understand our emotions better, including those we suppress which can still influence us.  Better understanding can lead us to be in better control of ourselves emotionally.

Please remember, psychological Counselling such as at Sovereignty Christian Psychology can help you work through and understand your emotions better.
