Search for Purpose

Mr. Peter Stanton

“Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'.”
― Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning

When Victor Frankl was a prisoner of war in a Nazi concentration camp, he observed that the prisoners who had a reason to live survived more than those that didn’t.

After he was released, he wrote Man’s search for meaning, which described his experience and argued for the importance of having a purpose in life.

As Humans we don’t just have basic needs of food shelter and clothing.  Nor do we don’t just crave love, money security and pleasure.   As humans we are motivated and driven the pursuit of what we find personally meaningful.  We seek something beyond ourselves.  We seek something to hope for that really matters; a purpose to live for.

Being a Christian, our focus is upon Christ, not just ourselves.  Our purpose is to honour and respect our God.  Our purpose is to love God and love other people.   There is the grand narrative of creation, the fall, the culmination the final judgement when there will be a new creation and all will be made right at the end of time.  With the cross at the centre all those in Christ live out this story in their own lives.   Being part of Christ’s redemption story of this world, makes each of our lives meaningful.  For are part of something greater than ourselves.   All people are involved for good or evil in how they relate to this God.

Jesus is the purpose: we are to live for the glory of God
