Good For Us

Mr. Peter Stanton

So shall My [God’s] word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.   Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV)

Even the best Bible verses can be abused.  But properly used they are the very opposite: good for us.

Isaiah 55:11 reminds us that God’s word will not result in empty nothingness; it will achieve God’s purposes.  There is a link here in this verse with creation which was formless and void (KJV) before God spoke and God’s continuing work in the world, thought his word.   There is power not just in what God but what God speaks.  The most trustworthy source of God’s word we have is the Bible.  While God can work in creation and through people without words, that isn’t the only way He works: it is His word that the Bible points to as having so much power and relevance.  And what he says to us changes so much in our lives in good ways.

In our every day struggles we can have confidence that God though His word can and will making things very much okay for us.   Knowing this can give us peace, confidence and hope in our hard times. Even when we don’t know how, we can know God has a way for us.

There are so many different ways people encourage us to focus on to how we can improve our lives, many of these are useful.  But this verse reminds us about how God’s word is good for us.

While people can misuse Scripture for there own abusive ends, that isn’t the end of the story. I am sure every Bible verse can and has been twisted to seem to mean things that are unbiblical and so damaging.  But we shouldn’t ignore that properly used, all of the Bible is so good.

And for some, familiarity with Biblical verses leads to bored and overlooking the power and meaning in God’s words. Sometimes what is needed, is to get beyond the biblical cliché.  We need to continue trusting in God’s word as meaningful and helpful in our present struggles.

God helps us understand and live for him, in many different ways, by your own individual reading of Scripture, through friends, church, and so many things the Spirit uses.  But another way way he might help you some work through the complexities of Scripture and how it integrates with own mental health issues is with a professional psychologist.
