Child Assessments

Assessments for Children

We conduct cognitive, achievement (academic skill), behavioural and Autism Spectrum Disorder assessments for children and adolescents.
This can be done to diagnose developmental and other issues, for funding purposes, or to provide an understanding of how your child learns and their current academic strengths and weaknesses. We provide a detailed report with each assessment including recommendations to help your child.

After the assessment and report are completed, we strongly recommend a feedback session (see below) to discuss with you the technical information and advice given in the report and what this means for you and your child. Our policy is to only waive this requirement in very exceptional circumstances.

We stress that the primary goal of any assessment is for the wellbeing, education or therapy of the child, and no particular assessment outcome or diagnosis is guaranteed.

Funding the cost of an assessment

Medicare rebates are not available for the Cognitive, Achievement or Behavioural Assessments. Only the Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment can qualify for a rebate of $84.80 for each of two sessions under the Helping Children with Autism (HWCA) package. Your private health insurance fund may cover cognitive assessment, please check your policy details.
The cost of an Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment can be offset by the Autism Early Intervention funding for children diagnosed under 6 years old, or the back payment of the Carer’s Allowance  only  if a diagnosis is made.

Cancellation Policy

We require 48 hrs notice for cancellations of appointments or a fee of $100 will apply. Due to the high demand for services, we often have people on our waiting lists, so it is greatly appreciated that if clients cannot attend they notify us promptly so we can vacate that time slot for another client. If you have emergency circumstances that require a late-notice cancellation, please call and discuss this with our receptionist and it may be possible to waive this fee.

Cognitive Assessment

If there are inconsistencies in your child’s performance or they are struggling to comprehend grade appropriate tasks, a cognitive assessment can examine the general thinking and reasoning abilities of your child along with their individual strengths and weaknesses.  The results of this assessment can provide recommendations for future improvements and support strategies. We can also determine if your child is eligible for funding to assist them at school.
A cognitive assessment is also a pre-requisite for entering some gifted children’s programs. This assessment is suitable for children between 6 years to 16 years and 11 months, and must not have been administered in the last two years. A two hour assessment session is required, after a 30 minute background information interview with the child’s parent or caregiver. Allow a total of 2.5 hours for a cognitive assessment.

Achievement Assessment

Includes a Cognitive Assessment

After the Cognitive Assessment, an additional two hour session is conducted typically within 7 days. The findings of the Achievement Assessment are incorporated into the Cognitive Assessment report. A broader range of academic skills is investigated with this thorough assessment (reading, mathematics, written and spoken language) to fully assess your child’s learning profile. Along with your child’s cognitive abilities, this assessment can also identify academic strengths and weaknesses to better plan for personalised interventions for your child.
